Dinakaran's land probe

The Survey of India has begun mapping the 600 acre property in a village in Tiruvallur district, allegedly owned by Karnataka High Court Chief Justice P D Dinakaran.

The team is verifying the claims of both - the district administration and the judge's representatives. But sources in the district administration say there are tell-tale signs of tampering in the property.

The four-hour-long topographic survey of Justice Dinakaran's vast property raised many questions on day one like - why have many wire fences on the property been cut? And why are the boundary stones uprooted, some broken and many missing? Are these tell-tale signs of tampering - to make it look like public property and not belonging to Justice Dinakaran? However, the judge's representative denies any tampering.

"The officials' claim that we have removed done this is wrong," said Duraiswamy, Survey Technical Advisor for Justice Dinakaran.

There is yet another allegation against the tainted judge - that the beautiful panchayat pond was encroached and made into a private property by him. And the villagers who brought their cattle for grazing were taken to task.

The mapping will take a fortnight; Survey of India officials say they will report what they see.

"This will be a tool for the government to take a right decision," said Sanjay Kumar, Director, Survey of India.

District administration sources say Dinakaran and his various firms have encroached on 199 acres of government land. An impeachment motion of the judge is underway and land grabbing is just one of the many charges Justice Dinakaran will have to tackle in the days to come.
