The European Union is dropping antitrust charges against Microsoft Corp. after the company agreed to give Windows users a choice of up to 12 other Web browsers.
Microsoft will avoid further EU fines if it sticks by a binding deal with EU regulators to provide a pop-up screen that lets users replace Microsoft's Internet Explorer or add another browser such as Mozilla's Firefox, Google's Chrome or Opera.
This will also allow computer manufacturers ship PCs without Internet Explorer.
Regulators can fine Microsoft up to 10 percent of yearly global turnover without seeking evidence if the company doesn't stick to this commitment.
